When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Why would a little girl want to be a firefighter? It’s because her Uncle was an amazing one. He loved his job and it showed. That’s the only job I knew him to have. (He graduated from the fire academy just a few weeks after I was born.) I’m sure he had other things too, just from hearing conversations as I was growing up and as an adult, but THIS, this is what stuck out to me the most.
When I was five, he came in his fire chief suit and did the fire safety class for my kindergarten class. It was something I still recall to this day. I can see him with his finger pointing kindly as he gestured to us, especially while learning how to stop drop and roll. Not everyone gets such an amazing experience, and I’m glad that I got to (and so did my younger sisters too).
Although I didn’t become a firefighter, I became a healthcare professional. I still aimed to serve. Now in the era of being Mindfully Productive, I serve in a new capacity that still helps others.
I’m forever grateful for his example in serving others. Thank you, Uncle Reggie.
